About the Author

The author retired early. Co-workers scoffed “What will you

do? You will be bored.” He gave them copies of a twenty year

plan. Many of the planned adventures have been accomplished

or continue; bicycling across the United States, hiking the

Appalachian Trail and The Long Trail, walking New Zealand’s

Milford Track, hiking the Himalayas, climbing the Chilkoot

Pass, skiing, kayaking and scuba diving. Dog sledding was not

on that first schedule. Elmer continues to advertise the benefits

of early retirement with, widely distributed, journals of

his adventures.

A coincidental meeting with Frank Turner, winner and

fixture of the Yukon Quest dog sled race, resulted in Elmer

developing a passion for sled dogs and dog sledding. The Yukon,

and the resilient independent people who live there, call him

back time after time. Other quests continue, from his rural

home in Virginia, but not during dog sledding season.
